After spending a year in France with Federale 1 outfit Le Bugue, outside-half Tomas Marks has returned to Wales to play for Premiership side Glamorgan Wanderers. He shares his thoughts on the season so far...
Glamorgan Wanderers – 11 games, 1 win – "Qui, c’est vrai, catastrophe!"
Joining a new team is certainly a character-building process. I’m now a hell of a character after our early struggle. Even though the results have been poor I am enjoying playing for the mighty Wanderers and against familiar faces and old teams.
The standard in the Welsh Premiership has increased and the size difference between French and Welsh players is very evident. The players in the Welsh Premiership are younger, faster and stronger than the French garcons. It has been brilliant to play against some rival players like Dai Flanagan, young Mathew Morgan and veterans like Cerith Rees. I certainly miss the champagne and foie gras in Le Bugue but I have always got the Homeguard in Ely.
Pourquoi beaucoup perdu?
It’s not rocket science but the main cause for our losses has been our defence, the phrase “leaking like a sieve” comes to mind. Our patient coaches Chris Ower and Matt Bolton have done some great work on our defence and I think we will turn the corner shortly.
Rygbi a Mwy
I have managed to find work with a TV company in Cardiff despite the biggest cuts since World War II. I have been working for the past four months on a new rugby chat show called “Rygbi a Mwy”. I have discovered many stories about Shane Williams, Gareth Edwards, Gwyn Jones, Gareth Davies, Stephen Jones, Ieuan Evans, Clive Rowlands and Jamie Roberts. Best bits from the programme were Gareth Edwards hitting his chest and reinacting the story of Clive Rowlands addressing everyone at the Angel Hotel in the 70’s saying “calon, teulu, mam, dad a calon...”
Did you know that Shane is an excellent artist, Gareth Edwards had a number 1 hit single, Gwyn Jones loves a curry, Gareth Davies is a wine connoisseur, Stephen Jones is a romantic, Ieuan Evans sold his own aftershave and Clive Rowlands captained Wales on his first cap. I have some great rugby knowledge now. The last in the series saw Jamie Roberts playing a mean guitar solo, talking about his injuries, his studies and Twitter and taking to the high seas - click here to watch the programme.
Futur
I am very excited by our next eight games in the league and it’s now time for us to deliver. Hopefully by the Christmas blog I will able to report a few wins and an addition to my personal tally of 73 points from eight games.
Allez Wanderers et Al Buga aussi! |
