Fired flyer Rupeni Caucaunibuca could be staying in France after all, if press reports that five clubs including Toulon are after him can be believed.
Not that we want to become the official newsmonger for Rupeni Caucaunibuca you understand, but Hugh Tube's assertion that the Fijian threequarter, released by Agen on Monday, may have played his last game in France could be wide of the mark if today's news that FIVE clubs were chasing the errant flyer's signature.
Agen coach Christian Lanta might have declared Caucau "not good enough for the Top 14", but Toulon, Castres, Biarritz and Toulouse were said to be interested in offering the Fijian a top-flight lifeline, while Pro D2 favourites Lyon have also expressed an interest in the 30-year-old.
His first stop on Tuesday was Castres, where he met officials before apparently moving on to Toulon in the afternoon. Philippe Saint-André would be the first to admit that his team have missed Sonny Bill Williams this season, and with Mafileo Kefu set to be suspended after his sending off at Castres and Geoffroy Messina and Felipe Contepomi not suited to the powerful crash-ball role, a fit Caucau would have been the perfect stand-in solution.
However, even normally extravagant club owner Mourad Boudjellal baulked at the thought of this particular vanity signing, telling local paper La Provence that the club "did not wish to sign Caucunibuca".
Biarritz have also been in touch, offering the player, who scored 65 tries in his seven seasons at Agen, a six-week trial period to assess his much-questioned physical fitness, while Toulouse, a centre short following the long-term injury to Yann David, have also had their say, with head of recruitment Jean-Michel Rancoule saying that while a club like his would naturally be interested, no meeting was planned.
"We're looking for a centre and his profile suits us," he told Rugbyrama. "But for now we'll have to see whether his ambitions are to play rugby or just to raise his asking price."
Caucau was apparently in talks with three of Australia's five Super 15 franchises earlier in the summer. That competition starts in February, and if his intention was to return to the southern hemisphere in a bid to play for Fiji in next year's World Cup, he would only be able to play in France for another four months at the most.
Pro D2 Lyon also told l'Equipe that they were interested in signing the player, last season's top try scorer in the division with 13. Despite boasting a 100% record this season, they have struggled for tries in their two matches so far.
Agen, meanwhile, have announced that they won't be recruiting a replacement for Caucau, and that they have no objection to his signing for another Top 14 club, although Rugbyrama suspects that his severance contract may contain a clause preventing him from appearing against his old club this season. |
