2 September 2009: Montauban celebrated an unlikely first win of the season at Stade Francais, while Toulouse come from behind to beat Bayonne and Toulon remain unbeaten with victory over Clermont

Stade Francais 35 Montauban 40; Toulouse 21 Bayonne 17; Montpellier 22 Biarritz 18; Toulon 26 Clermont Auvergne 21; Perpignan 21 Brive 9; Bourgoin 17 Racing-Metro 13; Albi vs Castres postponed

Montauban did what Montpellier couldn't do in Paris on the weekend and came away with a famous 40-35 win over Stade Francais. But Ollie Phillips will be kicking himself for a schoolboy error that let slip a golden chance to steal the win in the dying seconds - if his Paris teammates don't get there first.

Unlike Montpellier on Saturday, Montauban were trailing at half time by 17 points to 18, Cedric Rosalen's 40th minute penalty - his fourth - pulling the visitors to within a single point. Montauban had also scored the only try of the half, Romanian prop Bogdan Balan charging over in the corner after 14 minutes. Stade's points all came from the boot, Noel Oelschig kicking four penalties and Lionel Beauxis notching a penalty and a drop goal

Montauban took the lead immediately after the break, winger Emmanuel Cassin crossing after Julien Audy's tap penalty caught the Parisians napping, Jean-Philippe Viard burst through the gap and worked an overlap that put Cassin over.

Oelschig closed the gap with his fifth penalty on 52 minutes, but Montauban scored their third try and had one hand on a bonus point when Moroccan lock Abdi Boutaty took a ball at the back of a lineout and created space for centre Regis Lespinas to score in the corner.

Montauban led 31-21, and Rosalen made it 37-21 with two more penalties, and with 12 minutes to go, there looked to be no way back for the home team, even when Lionel Beauxis scored to take away Montauban's bonus point on 69 minutes. Ollie Phillips delivered the scoring pass, and with two minutes on the clock the English winger scored a try of his own when Julien Audy fumbled behind his own try line and Phillips pounced to close the gap to five points.

And in injury time the Parisians could have snatched a second comeback win in four days, when a chip ahead by Beauxis saw the outside half and Phillips chasing after the ball downfield. Phillips grounded the ball in goal, but the referee signalled no try as the Englishman was ahead of the ball when it was kicked and offside. Had Beauxis grounded Paris would have picked up a second win of the season, as it is they come away with just a bonus point and Montauban finally get off the mark in the most unlikely surroundings of Stade Jean-Bouin.

Bayonne almost matched Montauban's fortress-busting feat at Toulouse. The Basques led 14-6 at half time, kiwi winger Filimone Bolavucu scoring the first try after 16 minutes after fine work from Lionel Mazars. Mazars doubled the visitors' score on the half-time siren when he intercepted a Freddy Michalak pass to race 50 metres and ground the ball under the posts.

Toulouse put the visitors under pressure after the break, but error after error frustrated supporters and coach Guy Noves alike. Eventually persistence paid off as lock Rob Linde was yellow carded for entering a ruck at the side, and when Bayonne collapsed the resulting scrum five, referee Monsieur Rosich awarded the penalty try.

Bayonne still led by a point, but Michalak gave Toulouse the lead with a 68th minute penalty, and from another scrum five on 72 minutes, Jauzion and Clerc made room for No.8 Shawn Sowerby to score. There was just enough time for Pierre Bernard to hoof a 60-metre penalty for Bayonne, who pick up a bonus point but will be disappointed at their third defeat of the season.

Only two clubs remain undefeated in the Top 14, and with flu-struck Castres out of action tonight, Toulon made it three wins and a draw from four games with a hard-fought 26-21 win over this morning's league leaders, Clermont. The visitors stunned Stade Mayol by taking a 9-0 lead after 10 minutes, Seremia Bai and Anthony Floch sharing kicking duties in the absence of Brock James, kicking a penalty each either side of a Floch drop goal.

Jonny Wilkinson opened Toulon's account with a 14th minute penalty, although he missed two kickable attempts before creating a try for kiwi winger Sinoti Sinoti six minutes before the break. Bai struck back to give Clermont a 12-10 interval lead which he extended on 47 minutes, only for Toulon to hit back with a try for winger Clement Marienval. Wilkinson converted to make up for two earlier missed drop goals, and three penalties from his replacement Sebastien Fauqué gave Toulon a comfortable lead. Fauqué missed a late kick which would have denied Clermont a bonus point and although they dominated the final minutes, couldn't score the try that would have earned them a bonus point and a place at the top of the table.

Perpignan comfortably saw off Brive for their third win of the season and third place in the table. David Marty scored USAP's first try on 10 minutes with a brilliant weaving run through the visitors' defence, and Christophe Manas added a second try on 29 minutes, following up David Mélé's crossfield kick to beat Jamie Noon to grounding the ball. Nicolas Laharrague kicked three penalties and a conversion for the champions, with Luciano Orquera kicking two penalties for Brive, Andy Goode adding a first-half drop goal.

Bourgoin notched up a second home win in five days, holding on to beat Racing-Metro 17-13. The home team had the better of the first half, but the scoreboard man wasn't troubled until the 26th minute when les berjaillens took advantage of the sin-binnings of Racing captain Simon Raiwalui and Samoan centre Sefulu Gaugau to force a a penalty try after a sequence of scrum fives. Fabien Fortassin closed the gap with a 33rd minute penalty before Bourgoin started the second half with their second try, Fijian winger Albert Vulivuli marking his Top 14 debut with a well worked effort. Another Fortassin penalty and a try for scrum-half Mathieu Lorée brought the visitors back to within a point, but as put-upon Bourgoin fans nibbled whatever nails they have left after a nervous fortnight on and off the pitch, Benjamin Boyet restored the four-point lead on 68 minutes and that's how it ended.

Biarritz almost came back from the brink at Montpellier, where two tries in the last five minutes left les heraultais clinging on for the four points. Montpellier had led comfortably until the 76th minute, Benoit Paillaugue kicking four first-half penalties to a single three-pointer from Valentin Courrent. Julien Tomas extended the home lead on 52 minutes as the scrum half made the most of a half-gap to break the visitors defence and gather his chip through to score. Olivier Sarraméa's 65th minute drop goal made it 22-6, but Montpellier relaxed and allowed Benoit August and Nicolas Brusque to score late tries and earn Biarritz a bonus point.
