2 December 2009: Racing-Metro made it seven wins in a row with undoubtedly their best result of their first season back in the top flight - a 23-20 win at Biarritz
Biarritz 20 Racing-Metro 23 - Latest league table
This midweek match was a rearrangement of the November 5 game postponed after storms on the Basque coast, and the Parisians couldn't have imagined then that they'd be in fifth place when the game eventually took place.
The first half ended six-all, Dimitri Yachvili twice kicking the Basques into the lead and Jonathan Wisniewski twice levelling the scores with 35-metre penalties.
Wisniewski also saved Racing from a certain try, stealing the ball from Eduard Coetzee as the Biarritz prop, breaking from a driving maul, dived over the line. The video ref called it right, but two minutes later Yachvili was driven over the line but again a Parisian body was under the ball.
A minute before half-time a 50-metre break from Biarritz centre Karmichael Hunt ended with a wild pass, intercepted by Racing's Lionel Nallet who set up a counter into the hosts' 22. But it came to nothing and a disappointing first half ended all square.
Biarritz came out firing after the interval, Coetzee charging downfield and passing to Benoit August who was pulled down two metres short. But Yachvili was sharpest and chipped a ball into the corner for Takudzwa Ngwenya to touch down unopposed. Yachvili converted.
Replacement prop Fabien Barcella went close to doubling Biarritz's lead a few minutes later but his try-scoring pass to August fell short, and it was Racing that tied the scores on 54 minutes. Sebastien Chabal stole the ball from a maul, Wisniewski put through a grubber kick for Racing's Julien Saubade and Biarritz's Hunt to chase, but although the Biarritz centre was first to the ball, he deliberately slapped it over the dead ball line and referee M. Marchat awarded a penalty try which Wisniewski converted for 13-all.
It was 16-13 on the hour, Racing's forwards charging into the opposition 22 to set up a 25-metre drop goal, and a minute later, Yachvili's chance to level the scores from 40 metres fell short.
Racing made the breakthrough on 66 minutes, Sireli Bobo showing a clean pair of heels to score, taking a pass from Sefulu Gaugau after Chabal had set up the move by fielding a clearance from Julien Peyrelongue.
Wisniewski converted for a 23-13 lead, and although Yachvili missed a 40-metre penalty attempt eight minutes from time, the yellow carding of Racing prop Mikaele Tuugahala gave Biarritz the numerical advantage to force a penalty five metres from the tryline. Yachvili took a tap penalty to score Biarritz's second, and a minute from time the Basques almost stole the win when winger Ilikena Bolakoro raced into the Racing 22 and flung a pass to Jerome Thion, only for the lock to be called back for a forward pass.
With the clock through 80 minutes, Biarritz pressed for the winner, only for flanker Tanguy Molcard to drop the ball over the line and a famous Racing victory to be confirmed. Yachvili will be kicking himself over the two missed penalties, but Racing were good value for this seventh win on the bounce. |
