Narbonne 15 Saint-Etienne 24
Promoted Saint-Etienne climbed out of the drop zone with a shock win at Narbonne. Alexandre Peclier did the damage for les Stephanois, kicking all 24 points with seven penalties and a late drop goal to deny the hosts so much as a losing bonus point.
Narbonne did outscore their visitors by two tries to none, Samoan No.8 Manala Salavea bagging a first-half try and fly-half Christophe Ruiz adding the other to his five kicked points after the break, but Peclier punished les Oranges' indiscipline and earned CASE a first Pro D2 win just three weeks into the new season.
Lyon 28 Dax 13
Saint-Etienne's win means that only Dax remain pointless at the bottom of the table. After a dismal first two matches, les Dacquois couldn't have expected much from their visit to Lyon and that's just as well as the promotion favourites had this match done and dusted within an hour.
Full-back Romain Loursac scored the only try of the first half on 28 minutes, Pierre-Yves Montagnat adding 11 points to help LOU to a 16-3 interval lead. Anthony Lagardere kicked a second penalty after the break but two tries in five minutes from Lyon's back row killed the game off, openside Nicolas Bontinck touching down on 54 minutes and Ivorian blindside Eugene N'Zi picking up a temporary bonus point on the hour.
Dax's only remaining contribution was to deny Lyon that bonus, Fijian winger Saula Radidi's 70th minute try preventing the hosts taking maximum points from an otherwise successful afternoon.
Tarbes 24 Albi 30
It wasn't a bad weekend for Albi either. Not only did the cash-strapped clubs their three outstanding contracts finally ratified, but they remained top of the table with a thrilling last-minute victory at an increasingly impressive but equally unlucky Tarbes.
Once again, Tarbes had Fabien Fortassin to thank for their points, as the new arrival kicked seven penalties and dropped an early goal to keep the hosts' noses in front right up until the final seconds of the match.
Albi did merit the win with a try in each half, No.8 Vincent Clement scoring the first just before the break before winger and current Pro D2 top scorer Dave Vainqueur broke Pyrenean hearts with the winning score just a minute from full-time. Frederic Manca converted to bring his tally for the day to 20 points and keep Albi top of the table. Tarbes sit in mid-table after their second late defeat in three games following their opening day loss at Narbonne.
Colomiers 33 Pau 19
Colomiers continue to defy our predictions of relegation by retaining their 100% record with a comfortable win at home to fellow promotion pretenders Pau.
An 22nd-minute penalty try for the Toulouse side gave them a lead that they never relinquished, regular penalties from Frederic Couzier keeping the scoreboard ticking over and helping them to a 13-10 interval lead despite a try for Section winger Gregory Puyo and five points from the boot of Clement Darbo.
Australian centre Ben Martin opened up a two-score lead after the break with his first try for the club, and while Darbo added a penalty and Andre Hough dropped a goal to put one hand on a bonus point, another Couzier penalty and a late try for replacement scrum-half Sebastien Inigo gave the hosts a little more breathing space at the end.
Oyonnax 26 Bordeaux-Begles 9
A flurry of late scores gave Oyonnax's victory over l'Union a slightly flattering appearance, especially as the play-off regulars had trailed 9-3 going into the final quarter thanks to two penalties and a drop goal from les Bordelais' kiwi fly-half Gerard Fraser.
Jonathan Bousquet registered the hosts' only points of a tight first half that saw front rowers Salim Tebani and Franck Labbe sinbinned for an early exchange of handbags.
The hosts had struggled to escape their own half for the first hour, but the turning point came at the start of the final quarter, when Oyonnax were awarded a penalty try against a Bordeaux pack lacking binned No.8 Hugh Chalmers. Sebastien Bouilot followed up his conversion with a penalty soon after the restart, and in the dying seconds a counter attack from Oyonnax saw winger Jerome Naves race in from 50 metres to skew the score firmly in the hosts' favour.
Aurillac 36 Aix-en-Provence 9
Aurillac complete the top five thanks to their bonus-point win over Aix-en-Provence. Aix battled throughout a tight first half that ended 12-9 to the hosts courtesy of Maxime Petitjean's four penalties, but after the break it was all Aurillac, lock Duncan Naude bagging the first try five minutes into the second half and winger Francois Hery adding the second on the hour to establish a 29-9 lead.
Aurillac went looking for the bonus point but had to wait till the final play of the game before prop Vitolio Manukula crashed over for the extras.
Mont-de-Marsan 35 Auch 11
Stade Montois left it just as late to pick up their bonus point, Fijian winger Timoci Matanavou racing in three minutes from time to earn the full five for the Landes side.
The result was never in doubt after Mont-de-Marsan fired out of the blocks with early tries for flanker Julien Tastet and winger Julien Cabannes, but although Benat Arrayet and Maxime Bats put them out of sight with a string of penalties, full back Damien Duffau's 67th minute try for Auch made their hopes of picking up a bonus point look unlikely.
But a try for Argentine flock Luis Cedaro on 74 minutes left them one try short of the bonus, and Matanavou's first try of the season did the rest. The Fijian scored nine last term but came off the bench at half time to make his first appearance of this season.
Grenoble 31 Carcassonne 18
Grenoble finally registered their first win of the season with a home win over promoted Carcassonne, but had to wait until the final quarter to break the visitors' stranglehold and earn a bonus point.
Les Alpinistes were leading 18-9 at half time, winger Wylie Human scoring his first two tries of the season to lift them clear after Blair Stewart and Guillaume Garcia had exchanged two penalties apiece.
The second-half arrival of Top 14 veteran Cedric Rosalen sparked Carcassonne to life, as the former Montauban outside-half dropped two goals either side of a penalty to level the scores as the match entered the final 20 minutes.
Grenoble weren't to be denied victory, however, and their own fly-half switch reaped benefits as Englishman Rory Teague restored the lead with a penalty on 70 minutes, converted Grenoble's bonus-clinching penalty try a minute later and gave the score a comfortable veneer with a penalty two minutes from time.
Grenoble picked up a losing bonus in each of their earlier matches and leapt to eighth after this win. Carcassonne sit in eleventh but again battled hard and may not be the relegation certs that many presumed they would be. |
