Our Federale 1 favourites Le Bugue are far from safe from the drop, but their convincing win at Champagne capital Epernay surely warrants a small sip of bubbly
Epernay 0 Le Bugue 23: Toulouse weren't the only team heading back home after keeping a clean sheet on a trip to northern France. Yes, Toulouse crossed the country by plane where our Federale 1 heroes had to endure a 20-hour round trip by coach, but where Le Bugue went one better than the aristocrats of French rugby was in picking up a bonus point from their visit to basement boys Epernay.
No.8 Peni Tora sprinted 22 metres to open the scoring after just six minutes, and although Charly Platek converted, the freezing cold winds meant it was six minutes before half-time before outside-half Terry Fanolua added a second from a five-metre line-out.
Platek kept the scoreboard ticking over in the face of determined defence by Epernay after the break, but the hosts - winless all season - finally gave in on 73 minutes as winger Morgan Souply claimed the bonus point with his sixth try of the season.
The result lifted Le Bugue out of the drop zone by a single point, with the return match with Saint-Médard already looking like the relegation decider in the pool.
Also in Pool E: Orthez 17 Saint-Médard 12. Four first-half penalties by Guillaume Cazelle set Saint-Médard up for a good result at pool leaders Orthez, but last week's winners over Le Bugue had to settle for a bonus point after flanker Nicolas Lesburgueres scored a 50th minute try and outside-half Hervé Labat added a penalty and drop goal to his first-half brace to preserve the hosts' one-match lead at the top.
Next up: Le Bugue vs Orthez, Stade Renaud-Cruvellier, Sunday 28 March. After last-week's cross-country trek, it's a return to Stade Cruvellier for les Chevalliers, who face Pool E leader Orthez. The club, sited on the main Pays Basque train route from Pau to Bayonne, can consider itself unlucky not to be in the play-offs, missing out on the top half of Pool 5 by a solitary point after conceding two late kicks to Morlaas in the last 10 minutes of the regular season.
They've set about staying up with aplomb, winning 29-16 at Epernay before beating Saint-Médard 17-12 at home in week 2 of the play-downs.
Key to Orthez's success is the boot of outside-half Hervé Labat, who has kicked 176 of the club's 270 points this term, even claiming one of the team's 18 tries. Only back row man Jean-Marc Zubizaretta has scored more than one try, bagging three since his arrival from Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the summer.
More good news for Le Bugue is that apart from the win at Epernay (which hardly counts), Orthez haven't won away from home since September.
In the other Pool E match of week 3, Epernay visit Saint-Médard.
The news Fed-lines: It was another good week for the division's promotion contenders, with Limoges, Bourg-en-Bresse, Beziers, Carcassonne and Tyrosse all picking up bonus point wins. Carcassonne were the biggest winners with eight tries in their 51-5 win over Langon. Pascal Bustaffa scored a hat-trick and fellow winger Yannick N'Gog bagged a brace as the Cité club maintained a perfect record with 10 points from 10.
Only Limoges can match them, Senegalese centre Mohamadou Diarra scoring a hat-trick of his own to move to nine tries for the season. They visit Bourg-en-Bresse in the next round in three weeks, and with les bressanais on nine points after their own 41-15 win at Aubenas (winger Yohan Dernard nicking the extra point with his third try in the final moments), the game will have a big impact on who gets the easier path through the knockout stages.

The fate of two more clubs has already been decided in the play-downs, with Poitiers condemned to life in Federale 2 after a 50-0 home thrashing by Saint-Jean-de-Luz. They're joined by Bedarrides, who put up a decent fight at home to Niort but couldn't recover from a 13-0 half-time deficit and went down (quite literally) 13-7. Epernay, of course, were already down.
No-one's Federale 1 place is confirmed yet, but Orleans are just a win from safety after their 33-13 victory over Monteux. La Seyne's 23-10 over Lourdes makes the pilgrim town's task a little harder, as they sit six points short of safety, but Romans' chance of opening up a big gap on their group was scuppered by the poor weather conditions in the Isere region. They'll hope to get the game underway this weekend.
Finally, a big Allez! for Vallée du Girou, who won their first match since beating Le Bugue in October with a 6-3 win over Chambery. They are still 12 points short of safety with 20 up for grabs, so you never know...
